Music Tech Pioneers IX : Kim Ryrie : Fairlight : CMI to MFX and
Beyond !
Hosted by Vin Curigliano of AAVIM Technology, I am joined by guest
co-host Pete Brown of Microsoft and special guest Kim Ryrie, who is
the Co-Founder of Fairlight.
We cover Kim's early history with music and technology , and how
that lead to his early adventures in developing synthesisers and
the eventual founding of Fairlight, his early pioneering days
exploring revolutionary computer and music technologies that lead
to the development of the CMI, which was the Worlds first
commercially available sampling synthesiser and real time
sequencer.
We cover the series of events and chance meetings that eventuated
in the CMI ( Computer Musical Instrument) being introduced to
leading recording artists and producers, that embraced the
technology and catapulted the company into the mainstream of music
production. We discuss the meteoric rise, the fall, and the
eventual pivot away from Music Production and into Audio Post
Production
We discuss the lesser known game changing innovations introduced
with the MFX Multi Track Hard Disk Recording System, that was years
ahead of the competition and defined Digital Audio Workstations
throughout the 90's and beyond.
We cover Kims segue into new pioneering areas of loud speaker
time/phase correction technologies, the continuation of Fairlight
after his departure, the revival of the CMI in a more modern take
for its 30th Anniversary, and how it continues to inspire and
innovate via a dedicated community, as well as fresh developments
from 3rd parties.
We muse over the current state of Music Technology, sharing some
great insights and hilarious behind the scenes stories, and much,
much more.
